Includes latitude/longitude for mapping, total crash counts, hit-and-run counts, rates, and fatal crash counts. Columns: rank_by_rate integer or blank rank_by_count integer or blank intersection street A & street B crashes_5yr total reported crashes 2022-01-01 to 2026-04-24 hit_run_crashes_5yr crashes with Vehicle Hit and Run Flag = Yes hit_run_percent hit_run_crashes_5yr / crashes_5yr * 100 fatal_crashes_5yr crashes with Fatal Crash Flag = 1 latitude decimal degrees, mean of crash points longitude decimal degrees data-trend-by-year.csv Four-row year-over-year table, 2022 through 2025. Columns: year, total_crashes, hit_run_crashes, hit_run_percent DATA SOURCE All numbers derive from the TxDOT Crash Records Information System (CRIS) public Query Builder at https://cris.dot.state.tx.us/public/Query/. One year-range query per year, filter City = EL PASO, all crash severities and types, full attribute list export. The raw extract preserved in our project archive: data/raw/2026-04-24/crashes_units_persons_{YEAR}_elpaso_*.csv METHODOLOGY SUMMARY - Unit of analysis: 82,107 unique crashes after deduplicating on CRIS Crash ID across the 5 per-year exports. - Hit-and-run flag: a crash is counted if ANY unit (vehicle) in the crash has the Vehicle Hit and Run Flag = Yes. - Intersection key: Street Name + Intersecting Street Name, both required to be populated, plus At Intersection Flag = true. 21,462 of 82,107 crashes (26%) meet this strict definition, across 4,030 named intersections. - Rate ranking threshold: minimum 30 crashes at an intersection over 5 years, to avoid small-sample artifacts. - National comparison: ~11% U.S. urban hit-and-run share from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety 2018 research brief. - TxDOT highway codes (IH0010, SL0375, FM0659, etc.) translated to friendly names (I-10, Loop 375, Zaragoza Rd) in published tables. Full translation table in the project's Python source. We're happy to: - Share the full 700 MB raw CRIS extract (Dropbox or similar). - Run a comparable cut for another Texas metro for head-to-head. - Provide a statewide baseline if a reporter wants to compare El Paso's rate to Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio. LAST UPDATED 2026-04-24. Refresh cadence: once per year after TxDOT's CRIS processing backlog clears for the prior year.
